Ireland

East Coast and Midlands
Ireland

The eastern region of Ireland is where Dublin, the country's capital, lies, and is one of the main attractions for visitors. However, the area isn't one-dimensional, as it harbors beauty and peace within its underrated hills, gardens and woods.

You will scarcely find a more colorful and exciting city in Europe for travelers than Dublin; it ranks with Paris, London and Rome for visitors and charm. The Irish are revered for their charm, good nature and sense of humor, and all of these qualities are abundant in the town spread across the Liffey valley. Trinity College is among the leading sites due to its centuries-long history, place in European lore, and honor graduates (including Oscar Wilde, Bram Stoker, Samuel Beckett and Oliver Swift). The Temple Bar district is the pulsing heart of social Dublin with its shops, bars and restaurants, while Grafton and Henry streets are the headquarters for shopping. All through the city you'll find Georgian architecture, museums and houses of art, such as the National Gallery, adding a classic touch to your trip. And when you're ready for a more rustic excursion, visit Wicklow for its mountains, forests, waterfalls and lakes.

In Louth, travelers flock to Mellifont Abbey or Monasterboice for its sandstone high crosses and round tower. Others head to the Cooley Mountains, famed for their walking tours and protection zones specifically for leprechauns (as granted by the European Union). Meanwhile, if you're traveling in the fall, you'll find that the county of Meath takes Halloween pretty seriously; the holiday's origins trace to a Celtic festival originated over 2,000 years there. At Meath, you can visit the Hill of Ward, where druids celebrated the day with a vast pagan ceremony. However, there's more to Meath than a haunted holiday; known as the 'Royal county, it's rich in agriculture and a place where kings once roamed.

While your exotic trip around the eastern reaches of Ireland will be thrilling, you'll find the self catering cottages and apartments we offer are the country's equal in comfort and charm.
