A large island in Denmark, Funen is noted as the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen and is adoringly nicknamed 'the garden island.' It's gently rolling hills, orchards and half-timbered farmhouses swathed in wildflowers are broken up by biking and walking paths. Surrounded by an archipelago of charmingly smaller islands, its waters are also wonderful to explore by boat or kayak.
Historical interest points are also not lacking in Funen. From the boulder known as Hesselager's Stone who was carried to Funen by ice during the last glacial period to Egeskov Castle famed as Europe's best preserved Renaissance moat-surrounded castle—it's easy to see that Funen has brains and beauty. A Funen vacation cottage or Funen vacation rental promises unhurried excursions to Funen's many sights.
