Northern Austria is oriented toward nature-related pursuits and features fewer fast-paced activities associated with more eastern regions of the country. Farmland, rolling hills and friendly people are standards of the region, but travelers will also find natural spas, salt mines and other interesting natural phenomena.
Linz, the capital of Upper Austria, draws its personality from the Danube River that travels through its center, as well as its old and new influences. The old in Linz include the Schloss castle, and two landmarks just outside the city, St. Florian monastery and Malthausen concentration camp. The new includes the Ars Electronica Center, a high-tech hub in a city suburb.
Though the area skews more rustic than luxurious, it's not without sights and cultural highlights. Gmunden features several festivals; Freistadt is known for its castles; and Steyr offers a nostalgic inner city.
When the explorations of your day come to an end, return to a restoring meal and peaceful slumber in your very own Austrian cottage.
