At the center of Rutland lies Rutland Water, Europe's largest man-made lake. Voted Rutland's favorite tourist attraction, it's an important nature reserve serving as an overwintering site for wildfowl. Boating and hiking around Rutland Water are enjoyable ways to pass the time as well as perusing Rutland's rustic cottages built from limestone and topped with thatched roofs.
Visitors also enjoy day trips to the famous Barnsdale Gardens north of Rutland Water,
the Romanesque castle of Oakham and the historic Lyddington Bede House. Also noteworthy
is the horseshoe collection in Oakham; they were once a form of payment and many have royal heritage. The charming barns and farms that have been transformed into Rutland vacation cottages and Rutland vacation rentals allow guests to experience the tranquil rural areas of central England.
