The beautiful province of Overijssel lies along the lake Ijsselmeer and as a result gets most of its splendor and character from this magnificent body of water. Of particular interest are the capital of Zwolle and the Venice-like water palisades of Giethoorn.
Zwolle is the anchor of the western, and more rustic, side of the province, though it has considerable trade and service industry assets. Notable constructions are the Sassenpoort, a old city gate used for protection, along with the The Lady of Ascension cathedral from the late 1300s as well as the town hall.
Also notable is the city of Deventer, which was founded in the eighth century and is one of the oldest towns in the country; as such, it has plentiful restored houses from Hanseatic times and charming streets. Finally there's Giethoorn, where the streets have been replaced by narrow water passages as the result of peat excavation. The houses are built on miniature islands and wooden bridges link the city, and most travel is by boat.
The Dutch parks and lodges in Overijssel will complement your experience on the lands, waters and other wonders of the area.
