94th PGA Championship swings into Kiawah’s Ocean Course
The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort will join elite company in August of 2012 when the renowned course hosts the 94th PGA Championship. As the world’s greatest golfers descend upon this serene South Carolina island, the Ocean Course will become just the fifth course to host the PGA’s three major championships: the Ryder Cup, the Senior PGA Championship and, of course, the PGA Championship.
The 94th PGA Championship is poised to become South Carolina’s most-talked-about event of the year, and ResortQuest is proud to make its accommodations available to book during the PGA Championship dates. The championship tees off on Thursday, Aug. 9 and plays through Sunday, Aug. 12, 2012.
“We anticipate the demand for lodging on Kiawah Island during next year’s PGA Championship will be great,” said Ian Harris, director of sales and marketing in the Charleston region for ResortQuest by Wyndham Vacation Rentals. “ResortQuest is a true hospitality company, dedicated to exceeding guests’ needs. That’s why we’re opening these 2012 dates early in order to allow guests the best opportunity to find and book their ideal rental accommodations.”
The PGA’s fourth and final major of 2012, the 94th PGA Championship will shine the spotlight of what has been called the toughest resort course in America. Featuring panoramic views and unpredictable sea breezes of the Atlantic Ocean, the scenic course boasts 10 holes directly along the ocean and eight more parallel to those, giving this links-style layout the distinction of having more seaside holes than any other golf course in the northern hemisphere.

Baby, you’re a star
Though it’s not located in Hollywood, there is no doubt that Kiawah Island’s Ocean Course is a star. Quite literally, in fact. The course made its big screen debut in 2005’s “The Legend of Bagger Vance,” a nationally released movie starring Will Smith, Matt Damon and Charlize Theron playing roles in a story about a golfer down on his luck and trying to recapture it with the help of his caddy.
Here are a few more of the “starring roles” for this accomplished golf course:
- Hosted the 2007 Senior PGA Championship
- Hosted the 1991 Ryder Cup
- Hosted the 1997 World Cup of Golf
- Hosted the inaugural UBS Cup in 2001
- Hosted the 2003 World Cup Championships
- Hosted the 2005 PGA Professional National Championships
And now, golfers ranked in the top 100 will compete for the Wanamaker Trophy in 2012 on Kiawah Island for the first time. The PGA Championship is one of golf’s four major tournaments. The Masters, the British Open and the U.S. Open are the three others.
ResortQuest professionally manages accommodations ranging from comfortable single-bedroom villas to grand oceanfront homes on Kiawah Island and nearby Seabrook Island and Isle of Palms.
