South of Finland
Whether you seek rustic beauty and seclusion, a taste of the old world via museums and architecture, or the excitement of modern shopping and culture, Finland doesn't disappoint.
Travelers seeking to get away from it all will find eastern Finland qualifies like few other regions. One of the crown jewels of the region is Oulanka National Park, which has a rich biodiversity from glacial valleys to the thatched patterns of pines and spruces throughout the forest floor. For a little civilization, venture to Kuhmo, a sparsely populated city except during the annual Chamber Music Festival founded in 1970.
In the north, you'll find seclusion and unspoiled bliss. The green trails and placid meadows of the area are evident in Lapland, which produces many summer days (all of June, in fact) of endless sun. A few short weeks later, a multi-colored fall tapestry of golds, reds and browns can be found in the densely packed woods. For those seeking a bit more action, Suomutunturi is a well-known winter sports mecca. There are also architectural highlights such as Pielpajarvi Church.
The islands off the southern coast of Finland are almost too numerous to count, and the rocky and sandy beaches of the archipelago are quite an attraction. Helsinki is the most populous city in the country and the hub of Southern Finland. It's still unfinished in many ways with parks, forests and shorelines dominating the town. The peninsulas, bays and inlets give boating enthusiasts plenty of places to explore, while the wooden constructions of the Kamppi district are a counter to the baroque and Romanesque influences found around Europe. Also, Saimaa is one of the biggest attractions in Europe for its labyrinth of waterways, lakes, small bays and vast system of islands.
Oulu is the major city of Western Finland. Its city centre shopping is underrated, as are the cafes and restaurants of the area. In addition, all bathing in the city is not ice swimming; there are 17 beaches for visitors' pleasure. Another town adding color to the area is Jakobstad, the home of an Arctic museum (Nanoq) as well as a botanical garden (Skolparken).
