From the Black Sea coast to Pirin National Park, the southern region of Bulgaria offers history and relaxation, adventure and tradition.
Burgas is a sort of sister city to its northern neighbor, Varna. The coastal Black Sea town with roots in Roman times offers a balmy climate, surf and beach activities. Travel into the city to see the ornate churches and cathedrals featuring the work of Renaissance artists; the frescoes and icons are striking and memorable. Leave the city to visit the various lakes along its fringes, inhabited by many magnificent birds. Or visit nearby St. Anastassia Island, once the home of exiled revolutionaries.
Rila Monastery is perched high on the mountainside among the woods of southeast Bulgaria. The monastery is a repository for murals, woodcarvings, and other relics of the countryside as well as Bibles written on parchment. Rila is also an excellent launch for climbs and hikes through the hills and elevations of the area.
No matter where you travel in the region, the easy-to-reach cottages are comfortable and inviting.
