Southern Coastal Istria
Few areas have the pedigree of the southern reaches of Istria. Its beaches and bays were valuable to ancient mariners seeking to expand their empires or simply find a day's catch for the family. For this reason, the area remains as vibrant today as it was three millennia ago.
Pula is history defined. This city of 3,000 years was founded by the Romans, who left a considerable footprint. Built on a bay, it offers breathtaking views from its seven hills over the waters below as well as the many architectural highlights within its environs. The city has its own amphitheater built in the first century A.D.; in its day, it featured gladiator showdowns before 20,000 people. The Temple of Augustus is home to several sculptures and monuments from yesteryear, while the many medieval gates linger from a time when Pula was far less secure from invaders.
There's also the beach town Medulin, which is far more cosmopolitan and possessing of amenities, and Fazana, a fishing village situated adjacent to the Brijuni Islands that offers excellent wine, olive oil and seafood as well as water sports.
The beautiful blue waters of Southern Coastal Istria are a wonderful playground for visitors in the area. Wind surfing, fishing, sailing, diving to explore sunken ships, and just relaxing on the beach are popular ways to pass the time along the coast. Whether guests are looking for luxury or more rustic accommodations, there's a comfortable place for everyone.
Guests who come to the shores of Southern Istria get to mix the joy of exploration and adventure with the pleasures that come with a Mediterranean coastal destination. They're never disappointed.
