The nature lover may never want to leave the Southern Denmark region. It's marked by its unspoiled nature as well as its battlements and harkening to bygone days of battle.
At 1300 years old, Ribe, which sits far down the North Sea coast, is Denmark's oldest town. While the town is clean and modern, it bows deeply to its heritage with the nightly rounds of its night watchman (visitors are welcome to tag along) in addition to the cathedral and Viking museums.
For history, take a ferry to the Ertholmene or Christianso islands nearby. Though lightly populated, two of the islands have ancient fortresses built on them, remnants of days gone by when they were highly important to the Danish navy. The granite walls and cannons pointed to the water give the Christianso stronghold a military romance, one reason the site has become so popular with tourists.
For those with more medieval interests, make sure Hammershus is a destination. The castle, built in the 13th century, is the largest Danish ruin.
Finish your day by taking a load off and enjoying your favorite glass or a place at the table before collapsing in one of the cozy cottages we feature in Southern Denmark.
