The spa resorts of Western Bohemia once attracted kings and queens as well as names such as Beethoven and Marx. Though they suffered a post-World War II lull, they are back to prominence, as is this lovely area.
The historic spas only tell part of the story of Western Bohemia. Karlovy Vary, the most famous of the spa resorts, is carving out a niche in entertainment due to its international film festival. The town of Cheb, just across from the German border, features a stately medieval town square lined with restaurants specializing in pork and poultry, and Cheb Castle, now in ruins, was built with lava rock from a nearby volcano.
Franzenbad, the smallest of the three main Bohemian spas, has a subtle café culture downtown amidst its uniformly yellow exteriors, and the well-tended gardens add splendor. The sounds of the area also captivate: often, gentle music emanates from the gazebo at the center of things.
When your senses are on overload, return to the spacious and well-appointed environs of your spacious and well-equipped self catering property.
