Beaches and fishing are the commonalities for the cities along Western Portugal, Lisbon and Nazare among them. However, the sea is not the only attraction; beautiful villas, shopping and eating are also among the powers drawing visitors to the region.
Lisbon is a city that's undergone a transformation from rundown and unimpressive to modern and exciting in just over a decade. It is a river city fashioned on the banks of the Tajo with an electric nightlife as well as a generous helping of history in the form of its museums and sites such as the Castle of St. George in the hills outside the city. This castle was inhabited by Romans, Visigoths and Moors and even Portuguese kings. Another major attraction is the Tower of Belem, a white-stone building built in the early 16th century in the Manueline style. For a sense of the new, visit Nations Park, a creation left over from the international festival Expo 98. It's a headquarters for modern entertainment, including an aquarium, shopping center, restaurants and a walkway along the river.
Farther north, Nazare is a picturesque fishing village replete with beautiful beaches and colorfully costumed locals. Inside the city, visit Sitio for a breathtaking view of the town or travel to the Capela da Memoria, which commemorates a miraculous rescue of a Nazare resident reputedly by the Virgin Mary.
