The largest island in Denmark is also the home of its capital city, Copenhagen. However, don't think of it as too populous for charm or too busy for visitors.
Holiday homes, beautiful coastlines and green woods add character to the fabric of the island. Among the castles that are the rival of any in Europe are Kronborg, the setting for Shakespeare's Hamlet, as well as Frederiksborg at Hillerod. Venture to Roskilde to view Viking culture and a 12th-century cathedral, or head north for some of the island's best sandy beaches.
Lolland, Falster and Mon are islands of varying topography, but the beautiful fjords and protected landscapes share a reputation for breathtaking scenery; surveying the isles' parks bears a bounty for the eye. At Mon, the Mons Klint chalk cliffs aren't always easy to reach offseason, but well worth the trip to see the towering white walls looming over black stone beaches along the Baltic coastline. The small farm houses and the rolling lawns surrounding them give a quaint, cozy feel to the area.
When you're done walking the courts where royalty once trolled or taking in nature's wonders, retreat to any of Zealand's cottages in the portfolio to renew and reload.
